It’s just towards end up so it starts to fall apart, nevertheless slap-upwards finale rescues they in the ‚red‘. Wonderfully staged and you can smartly dialogued, it’ll have zero high challenge inside lifestyle down the extremely unsightly label.“ [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said „The movie actions during the an easy pace, the brand new talk try smooth and you may characterisations generally energetic. Cock Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes lead the newest cast skillfully, because the detective is used considerable aplomb of the see your face identity, Lee J. Cobb.“ [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on The Yorker listed „That it terse and taut flick noir was considering brand new close and you can professional disputes of term character, the violent genius (played from the Dick Powell) about a classy illegal casino. The film’s journalist and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a beneficial multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal limits, between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) has worked within casino and dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic script, the brand new cast’s suavely controlled body language out of love and you can menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly cocky photo (also their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really intricate spectacle an invisible vintage of one’s genre.“ [ 10 ]

Photograph has motion and suspense, and you will specific small touches from laughs to add flavor. Ace activities from the Cock Powell, as the a playing family overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, together with within the score . Whilst the spot comes after a common development, the fresh new characterizations is actually fresh and the activities good enough so you can overbalance. Dialogue was terse and relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney contact. Strange cam angles show up occasionally so you can intensify focus and you can temporarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling given that movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand new creator and you will user producer, also aids in making it a soft design.“ [ eleven ]

Its generally an issue of seeing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces stylishly when you are a big shed off stars and you will stars give your traditional support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little lady exactly who brings about the fresh best in him and you may Ellen Received is the easy and slinky vixen just who will get your for the jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy since the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a unique ready concert tour because the an exhausted cops inspector just who ultimately shuts the truth. Significant amounts of ingesting and you may puffing is carried out of the the worried.“ [ several ]
